Nuts and bolts are used to attach the climbing wall parts, specifically the holds, unto the wall itself. Once the structure is made up and found structurally sound, hand and foot holds can be attached to it. It is not wise to attach these wall climbing parts before the panel is put up since there may be some necessary corrections that can alter their position.
This advice is true for cave like structures where the framework may be more complicated than a single panel wall. Cave-like structures need a sound frame that may extend up to the top since these are usually made of four different walls where hand and foot holds are attached. Taller single panel climbing walls may benefit from attaching the hand and foot holds before putting it up since there may be some difficulty attaching these when the wall is already up. In spite of this, many home based single panel climbing walls are not so high that a ladder cannot solve the attachment problem. It is wise not to make the wall too high because the owner might see the need to change the design of the hand and foot holds to increase or decrease difficulty. Making a woodie can be done in a single day, provided the climbing wall parts and other basic necessities for the framework are complete. Having a basic concept or design which has been seen and examined by a builder may be best since the structure needs to be safe and structurally sound. |
